The doors are about to open on another great year for the Philosophy Film.

Submit your movie to the 2nd Annual Atlanta Philosophy Film Festival.

If there is a philosophy that guides your filmmaking. If an idea more complex than the tools of contemplation or discussion or even prose could handle has taken root in your life; an idea bold enough to have driven you to the film median as a last means of expression, a final vehicle for exploration- then THIS is the festival for you! Here, ideas are King, dreams are our court, and possibilities are the knights that protect us from mundanity.

For filmmakers, there are NO ENTRY FEES!

The Atlanta Philosophy Film Festival is dedicated to philosophy films that exemplify the pursuit of knowledge through the moving image. Films that guide us through the questions and speak to the human condition. Film is Philosophy expressed through the medium of image- realized through light, shadow, and sound. This year we are accepting short film and feature films in all genres and categories from professional and student filmmakers from around the world.

DIRECTORS CHOICE AWARD announced...

After much deliberation, we have decided that the Directors Choice Award will be given to "In the Fall of Gravity," a unique animated philosophy film directed by Ron S. Cole of the United States. You can see video clips and production stills, read the directors statement, and learn about the making of the film at the Directors blog.

AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARD announced...

Last night's 2009 Atlanta Philosophy Film Festival was a true success.

We far exceeded our expectations for our little philosophy film festival in terms of the amount of people who attended and the positive reaction we garnered. We greatly appreciate the many, many people that lined up inside (and outside!) the Plaza Theatre and waited expectantly for our unique and intriguing program of Philosophy Films. No person is pleased by everything, but we believe we offered a program of films that was diverse enough to offer everyone something to be pleased about.



The overwhelming favorite and winner of the Audience Choice Award goes to the brilliant film, "Monsieur Cok," directed by Franck Dion of France. It is no surprise that this award winning animation was highly regarded by students, lovers, and enthusiasts of both film and philosophy.



The recognition is well deserved.

"I am very happy to have found your festival. As far as my research went, you're the only film festival that focuses on life's greatest questions, which i think very few people dwell on. Also, i read in your page "the 1st edition", i hope that this festival will be a success and will continue years from now so as to create a community of filmmakers who stimulate minds and educate people."

Quote to Strike the Mood

I'd been looking for a quote that would embody the Atlanta Philosophy Film Festival, but I wanted to find it organically- you know, by the act of reading (not googling "great quote that will make everybody think I'm brilliant). As luck would have it, Ralph Ellison scripted a beautiful passage very early on in his work, "Juneteenth." I believe this passage really captures much of what I look for in the cinema, or any art form, and indeed in a great philosophical film. It goes...

Man is born to act, to make mistakes, and to die. This all men know. But in the graceful acceptance of his fate, and in his protracted and creative dying, man builds his monument, he structures and makes manifest his accusation of the universe. He secures his earthly gains, sets the course of the ever-receding future and makes art of his yearning.

Thank you Mr. Ellison, I do believe I am ready to throw a Philosophy Film Festival now.
